The goal of Hill Climb Racing is to drive long distances through challenging racing stages as progressively as possible while collecting coins, taking advantage of unrealistic physics and using only two simple controls: gas and brake pedals. While in the air, depressing these pedals would instead spin the car, allowing the player to control the angle at which it lands. Fuel is replenished by picking up gas canisters or batteries along the way.

The player can perform stunts like driving the car in the air for a long time or flipping it to earn more coins, which after the race may be spent on upgrades or unlocking new stages and vehicles (including monster trucks, dirt bikes, tanks and Santa’s sleigh). The game ending conditions are exhausting car fuel or crashing into the driving avatar head.
